Maranoa Regional Council has welcomed the recent announcement by the Queensland Government to invest in unlocking new housing opportunities in Roma through the Residential Activation Fund.

Just under $10 million has been secured through the program to support enabling infrastructure for the first stage of the Police Paddock subdivision, unlocking 64 residential lots in Roma’s growing western corridor.

This announcement marks the beginning of a broader staged development, with future phases to be progressed in line with local demand and housing needs.

Mayor Wendy Taylor, who also serves as Portfolio Chair for Government Relations and Housing, said the announcement highlights the strength of collaboration between Council and the State Government in addressing regional housing challenges.

“This funding reflects the positive partnerships that can be built between local and state government when we work together to meet the needs of our communities,” Mayor Taylor said.

“We know housing availability is a growing issue in many regional centres, and this announcement helps ensure we’re playing our part in creating opportunities for people to live and work in the Maranoa.”

Deputy Mayor Cameron O’Neil, Portfolio Chair for Major Projects, said the funding enables Council to move forward with delivering the infrastructure needed to unlock land for residential development.

“This project isn’t about Council building homes - it’s about unlocking land supply and supporting private sector investment,” Cr O’Neil said.

“This first stage will deliver water, sewer and road infrastructure to enable 64 new blocks in a well-connected part of Roma’s western fringe. Importantly, the master plan provides for future stages, which can be delivered as demand grows.”

“It’s a practical and proactive step toward addressing housing availability in Roma, while also creating real opportunities for our local building industry and generating jobs across the construction sector.”

The Residential Activation Fund is a $2 billion Queensland Government initiative supporting the delivery of trunk infrastructure to accelerate housing across the state. The Police Paddock project was one of several successful applications under Round 1 of the program.

Council will share further updates on project milestones and timing as works progress.
