Waste

Council operates 10 waste facilities across the region.

Roma operates as a landfill site where waste that cannot be recovered can be buried on site.

Changes are currently being made that will see the remaining facilities transition to waste transfer stations. Waste Transfer Stations provide the community with a location close to them to dispose of their waste items, with that waste then transferred to Roma for recovery or landfill.

The transition to Waste Transfer Stations and other improvements are necessary to ensure that our facilities meet State Government requirements while also meeting the needs of users, the community, and the environment.

General Q&As

  • What happens to the different types of waste that are collected?

General waste: Is taken to the Roma Waste Management Facility where it is landfilled.

Concrete: Where possible concrete will be separated and recycled at Roma. Where it cannot be separated it will be landfilled.

Green waste: Depending on the amount of contamination it may be mulched or landfilled. You can assist by ensuring that green waste is free of contaminants.

Metals:  Collected and taken away for recycling. This includes degassed fridges and other white goods.

Motor oils: Collected and taken away for recycling.

  • Why aren’t more types of waste recycled?

With few recyclers based in regional areas, we are a long way from most recycling facilities.

Except for metals, which have a good market for recycling, the cost of transporting recyclables is often too high to make recovery economically viable. With the impacts of transport factored in it achieves little if any environmental benefit.

Contamination in recyclable material such green waste can make it unsuitable for reprocessing and recycling.

  • What is a transfer station?

Transfer stations consolidate waste at local regional sites before transferring to a central landfill site.
