New addition to the Wall of Fame

A Maranoa sport milestone was marked last Saturday, 26 July, as local athlete Amy Lorenz’s photo was added to Maranoa’s Wall of Fame.

To honour this significant achievement, Council held a celebration for Amy alongside her friends and family last Saturday, 26 July.

The Wall of Fame located at the Maranoa PCYC in Roma celebrates the outstanding achievements of local athletes who have reached the pinnacle of Australian sport. This honour board recognises individuals and teams who have achieved national representation and excelled in their respective sports.

To have a photo placed on Maranoa’s Wall of Fame, an athlete must have represented Australia in their chosen sport and be successful through an endorsement of Council.

Roma born-and-raised Amy, qualified by competing in the Global Youth 7s tournament held December in Auckland at the 2024 Australian Under 18 Rugby 7s team.

Spokesperson for Sport and Recreation, Cr Peter Flynn, said it was an honour to add Amy Lorenz to the Maranoa PCYC Wall of Fame on behalf of Maranoa Regional Council.

“Now on the wall with 35 other exceptional athletes, her achievements are inspiring not just to us at Council, but to aspiring athletes across the region,” Cr Flynn said.

“The name ‘Amy Lorenz’ is a well-known within the region through her vast sporting achievements recognised through ceremonies, team meetings, and stories in multiple media outlets.”

“It is important to showcase the wide range of athletic talent that comes out of the Maranoa and build our regional pride; the PCYC Wall of Fame is a great way to do this.”

Amy said she was honoured to be recognised as a local athlete in her hometown.

“Seeing my name and photo up there with so many others I look up to is surreal,” Amy said.

“Rugby 7s challenges me in every way, physically, mentally and emotionally and this is what keeps me coming back. It’s a sport that demands everything from you, and I love that.”

“You don’t have to have it all figured out from the start you just need to be willing to work hard, open to learning new things, and keep showing up even when it’s tough. Enjoy the journey, celebrate the small wins, and remember that every setback is just a setup for a comeback.”

Amy is now part of the Reds/QAS rugby 7s squad and hopes to represent Australia on a national level again in the future.
