Year 4 students from St John’s last week got an insider's view into the works of Council as they assumed the role of CEO, mayor, councillors and residents for a mock Council meeting.

Watched on by Mayor Wendy Taylor and Cr Amber Davis, the students debated the question ‘should the Roma Denise Spencer Pool be free?’

St John School of Roma Year 4 teacher, Mrs Emma Chandler, said it was important for the students to develop an understanding of the business of Council.

“We have been learning about the local Council and what its role is within our community and it was important for students to experience that first hand,” Mrs Chandler said.

"Highlights for the students were getting to meet the Mayor and Councillors and having conversations with them about what they felt was important. Students want to be involved in their community and it is important that they know how they can be from a young age.”

Mayor Wendy Taylor said it’s important to educate the younger generations on the role Council plays in their community.

"It won't be too long before they are voters, and even members of Council themselves, and it was a great opportunity for our next generation to learn more about the work the Council does.

"It was good for Councillor Davis and myself to learn from them too! We got to watch an energetic discussion."

"We were thrilled to host the students, and now have some big decisions to make ourselves!"
