Maranoa’s new Mayoral chains and ceremonial robe had their first outing, worn by Mayor Wendy Taylor as she welcomed the country’s newest Australians.

The items of civic regalia were first proposed by Mayor Wendy Taylor to enhance the formality and dignity of occasions such as Citizenship Ceremonies and Australia Day Awards.

Following Council’s endorsement to acquire the robe, Cr Taylor offered to personally purchase the Mayoral chains and donate them on behalf of herself and her late husband, Peter Taylor.

“I felt it was important that civic events reflect the pride our community has in the region,” Cr Taylor said.

“Last night I was honoured to preside as Maranoa residents made their Pledge of Commitment to our country.

“Seeing them dressed in the traditional costumes of their countries of birth as they joined us in becoming Australian citizens, I felt it appropriate that I, too, was able to honour the solemnity of the occasion and reflect the pride and dignity of our local community.”

Mayor Taylor said the chains represent the region’s history.

“The term bars are inscribed with the names of the Mayors who have served since the region’s formation, recognising those who have served the region before us.”

After an expression of interest process was unable to identify a local seamstress willing to make the robe, it was acquired from a professional robe maker.

The Mayoral chains were custom-made, purchased through local jeweller Coomber Bros and designed to last for generations.

Cr Taylor’s purchase of the chains underscores a strong commitment to civic pride and responsible financial stewardship during a time of fiscal constraint for Council.
