Work to commence on Denise Spencer Aquatic Centre

Render of the planned Denise Spencer Aquatic Centre

The next phase of the Denise Spencer Aquatic Centre redevelopment is progressing, with Hines Constructions established on site and preparing to commence demolition works.

This stage will include the removal of existing infrastructure, including the demolition of the main pool’s distinctive shade structure.

Installed in the early 2010s, the unique shade structure - hand-crimped into shape onsite - has served the community well for more than a decade.

Council looked closely at whether the structure could be kept or reused as part of the redevelopment. However, detailed assessments confirmed it wasn’t possible due to the highly specialised, site-specific way it was built.

Keeping the structure would also have made it impossible to deliver a key feature of the new design: a World Aquatics-compliant facility. This was an important outcome from community consultation and is something Council is committed to delivering, to help ensure the upgraded facility can support regional-level events into the future.

While the structure cannot be reused or repurposed within the new facility, its materials will not go to landfill. Components will be dismantled and transported off-site for recycling, in line with Council’s commitment to reducing waste through the redevelopment.

Council has also undertaken a thorough onsite salvage process where useful materials, including furniture, electrical items, pumps, signage, and a smaller shade structure have been redistributed to Council’s regional pool facilities and other community sites in Roma.

The demolition work is a necessary step in preparing the site for new, improved infrastructure that will continue to support community recreation and wellbeing well into the future. Council will continue to provide updates on the redevelopment as milestones are reached.

We thank the community for their patience and ongoing support as we work to revitalise this valued community asset.
