Council highlights dangers of dumping Asbestos

Maranoa Regional Council has closed a portion of the Roma Waste Facility after a load of asbestos containing building waste was uncovered at the site.

The affected area includes the building and construction disposal zone.

The disposal area will be temporarily closed while Council takes precautions to remedy the site. Residents who use the facility will be directed to other areas for waste disposal during this closure.

Mayor Tyson Golder said people had been put at risk by the illegal dumping.

"Incorrectly disposing of asbestos is illegal, we all know the risks associated with exposure to asbestos.

"It is common that building products manufactured prior to 1995 may contain asbestos. I cannot stress enough for local residents to please speak to a registered builder about the requirements on how the materials can be disposed of correctly.” said Cr Golder.

Council encourages the local building sector, allied trades and DIYers to take proper precautions when renovating or demolishing older buildings (built before the mid-1990s) as they are likely to contain asbestos containing materials (ACM).

The materials would have been brought into the Roma facility in recent weeks.
