Selective Inspection Program set to commence this week!

Council’s annual Selective Inspection Program is set to commence this week with the program running from Monday, 6 September to Friday, 26 November.

The annual program takes place to encourage responsible animal ownership within the Maranoa region and to assess compliance with the State Government’s Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 for dog registration and regulated dog provisions.

Inspections may occur in premises situated within the townships of Amby, Injune, Jackson, Mitchell, Muckadilla, Mungallala, Roma, Surat, Wallumbilla and Yuleba. During the program, Council will only visit properties where officers have a reasonable belief that an unregistered or regulated dog may be present.

Deputy Mayor Geoff McMullen said the Selective Inspection Program has been very successful, resulting in a year on year improvement in dog registration within the region.

“The program also assists with the collection of statistical data to provide an accurate record of the number of animals in the area and is a method of identifying lost pets so they can be reunited with their owners,” Cr McMullen said.

“I encourage all dog owners within the Maranoa Region to ensure that all dogs are kept on their properties and are registered and microchipped at all times in accordance with the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008.”

Prior to inspections commencing this week, Council has provided information to residents about responsible animal ownership in an effort to reduce the number of fines issued this year. This includes:

  • the issue of renewal notices in the first week of June
  • payment reminders via SMS to those animal owners who have supplied a mobile number
  • signage on Community Safety vehicles
  • media releases
  • Facebook posts
  • public notice via a letterbox drop.

Council records indicate that there are 357 outstanding unregistered animals, of which 304 are dogs.

To avoid a fine, and be a responsible pet owner, please register your animal via BPAY, online, phone or visit Council’s Customer Service Centres.
