Learn how to dispose of sharps safely in the Maranoa

Maranoa Regional Council would like to remind residents to please dispose of sharps (needles, lancets and syringes) safely and not to throw away sharps or sharps containers with general rubbish, in household bins or at Council's waste facilities.

Loose sharps must be contained in an Australian standard yellow sharps container and then disposed of correctly through your medical professional, hospital or local pharmacy.

Used sharps such as needles, lancets and syringes must be disposed of the right way to avoid spreading infectious diseases and to ensure our waste collection team is not put at risk. This includes not placing any loose sharps into your general waste collection bin or disposing of them in toilets, cans or glass containers.

Businesses such as veterinarians, doctors and hairdressers that use sharps for procedures or services must arrange for a medical waste disposal contractor to dispose of used sharps.

Please visit www.safesharps.org.au to find safe container disposal locations across the Maranoa region, or visit https://bit.ly/3rcE2fe to find a pharmacy near you that participates in the Pharmacy Needle and Syringe Program (PNSP).
