Queensland Government's $10 Million Investment in Building Bush Tourism

Two projects have been put forward by the Maranoa Regional Council to the Bush Tourism funding round due February. Council resolved at its 24 January 2024 meeting to put forward two long projects that have been the subject of prolonged advocacy. These are the Injune - Gunnewin Rail Trail and Yuleba Fire Tower.  Other organisations and tourism are also eligible to apply to this round and are urged to apply.

Acknowledging that this will be a very competitive round across regional Queensland, Council recognises the impact that these initiatives could have on regional tourism and economic development. If funded, these projects will expand the tourism experience in the Maranoa and have a flow on effect to both travellers and the local communities that host them.

Mayor Golder stated that ‘the Gunnewin Rail Trail has been proposed by the Injune District Tourism Association and will have a special focus on the historic Injune – Old Maranoa Collieries. This project aims to build upon the successful "Walk the Line" event held in 2020, celebrating the centenary of the Roma to Injune Rail Line.’

Mayor Golder stated ‘in addition, the Yuleba Fire Tower project will create a towering structure, housing not just a fire tower but also an immersive historical exhibit that tells the tales of our vibrant past.’

The closing date for applications to the Building Bush Tourism (BBT) Fund is February 1, 2024. Council will update the community on the outcome of these applications once the results have been published.
