Sculptures Out Back

Sculptures Out Back is an outdoor sculpture exhibition set along the banks of Bungil Creek in Roma, in the heart of the Maranoa. From 13 June to 26 September 2026, large-scale works by established and emerging Australian sculptors are installed across the open landscape, where the country itself becomes part of the work.

Rather than a gallery, the exhibition unfolds along the creek as a walking trail, with each piece given space and sky around it. Visitors can move at their own pace, doubling back and stopping where something holds them.

The 2026 exhibition carries nine prize categories, headlined by the $25,000 Origin and APLNG Open Acquisitive Prize. The field ranges from monumental steel pieces to finely detailed work in metal, timber and recycled material, the product of months of design, engineering and fabrication. Some works are built specifically for this setting, shaped to stand in the landscape rather than a room.

For Roma and the wider Maranoa, the exhibition has become a fixture of the regional calendar, bringing contemporary sculpture to the bush and giving visitors a reason to slow down and look closely. It rewards an unhurried visit. Allow an hour to walk the full trail, longer if you want to sit with individual works or return to the ones that intrigue you.

Sculptures Out Back runs from 13 June to 26 September 2026 along Bungil Creek in Roma, Maranoa region, Queensland.
