Tips for pet owners this holiday season (3).png

Summer’s here, and Maranoa Regional Council is reminding pet owners to keep their furry friends – and all animals – safe and cool during the warmer months.

Here are a few hot tips to help your pet survive the heat:

  • At home, keep pets cool with plenty of shade, fresh water, and frozen treats.
  • For smaller animals like guinea pigs and birds, bring them inside cover their cages with wet towels, and provide icepacks or frozen water bottles for the animal to lean against – these animals are especially sensitive to heat
  • Make sure horses and livestock, ensure they have access to shade and extra water to stay hydrated.
  • Provide plenty of fresh, cool water in a couple large containers under shady areas
  • If your pet seems to be in discomfort, try wetting its feet and misting water onto its face. This is an option for dogs, cats, poultry and caged birds as many animals control their inner temperature through their feet. Please note, it’s important not to saturate a bird’s feathers as this can cause them to go into shock.
  • Walk dogs in the early morning or evening to avoid burnt paws and dehydration. And remember, NEVER leave pets in hot cars – it can be deadly in minutes.
