Apprenticeships that unlock career dreams

People across the Maranoa are on the road to their dream careers thanks to Maranoa Regional Council’s current apprenticeship and traineeship intake.
One of Council’s newest apprentices, 19-year-old mechanic Angus Hankinson, is working towards his dream job of becoming a farmer, following his parent’s wise advice to learn the ropes of fixing machinery before getting onto the farm.
“It’s been pretty fulfilling getting to work on trucks and a bit on tippers and plant,” Angus said.
“I like the versatility of the work we do, from cars and different types of plant machines, up to graders, trucks and trailers. The different type of work we get to do each day, it’s never the same.”
Angus encourages others to look into doing an apprenticeship with Council.
Angus’ manager, Team Leader of Maranoa Regional Council’s Workshop Services, Donald ‘Don’ Gant said Council is worth looking into as it not only helps you reach your career goals but also has some great benefits for the employee.
“It’s rewarding, I like the idea of RDOs, it’s nice to have a day off every now and then. I’ve been here 25 years so it must be saying something,” Don said.
“I was on the spanners all my life, from there I’ve gone into a Leading Hand position then Team Leader. I got into it and never looked back. Stick around a while, things happen.”
Council’s current apprentices and trainees span across a variety of industries, including mechanics, plumbers, metal fabrication, business admin, parks and gardens and ICT.
Council is currently on the lookout for two Business Admin trainees (Fleet & Workshop Services, and Tourism) and two Apprentice Plumbers.
Portfolio Chair for Local Business and Procurement, Councillor Amber Davis encourages people to consider a career in Council.
“The Maranoa region is one of Queensland's most dynamic regional communities and the careers at Maranoa Regional Council reflects that,” Cr Davis said.
“I recommend people to keep an eye out for Council’s job vacancies and inquire about the employee benefits; the opportunities are endless.”
