Enjoying a fire on a chilly evening? Keep it safe and neighbour-friendly!

There’s nothing better than gathering around a fire on a chilly evening, enjoying the crisp air and a delicious steak or snag with family and friends.

However, it’s important to be mindful of your neighbours and follow Council’s Local Laws to ensure everyone stays safe and happy.

Under Council’s Local Law, you must not light a fire that:

  • Is not enclosed in a fireplace designed to prevent the escape of fire or burning materials.
  • Produces smoke or fumes that could cause irritation, annoyance, or distress to others.
  • Poses a risk to people or property.

Helpful Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Fire:

  • Use a firepit: Contain your fire in a firepit or fireplace that prevents fire and burning materials from escaping.
  • Always monitor your fire: Ensure someone is present to supervise the fire at all times.
  • Choose the right fuel: Use charcoal products to minimise smoke and maximise heat.
  • Avoid green waste: Do not burn household green waste like grass clippings. Instead, dispose of it in your general waste bin (bagged) or at a Council waste facility.
  • Check the weather: Avoid lighting a fire on windy or unfavourable weather days.
  • Don’t burn hazardous materials: Never burn paints, chemicals, or other hazardous substances.
  • Avoid wet or green vegetation: These materials create excessive smoke and are unsuitable for burning.
  • Talk to your neighbours: Communication is key! Let your neighbours know if you’re planning a fire and address any concerns they may have.

Important Reminder: If your fire is larger than 0.8 metres in diameter and is not enclosed in a fireplace designed to prevent the escape of fire or burning materials, you may need a permit from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.
