Wet weather can create ideal conditions for potential locust outbreaks across parts of Queensland. In response, Biosecurity Queensland is urging graziers, landholders and aerial contractors to take early, proactive steps now to manage the risk of locust swarms.

While there have been no reports of Locusts in the Maranoa region, locusts can cause significant economic and social impacts by damaging pastures and crops, threatening local industries and communities.

There are 3 main locust species of concern in Queensland, the Australian plague locust, the spur-throated locust and the migratory locust.

Locust management is a shared responsibility, and timely action can make a difference. Early detection and targeted spraying of nymphs can assist to protect pastures and crops from localised damage and prevent locust swarms.
