Summer’s here, and Maranoa Regional Council is reminding pet owners to keep their furry friends – and all animals – safe and cool during the warmer months!

Heading away for the holidays? Make sure your pets are cared for – whether they’re joining you, staying at a kennel, or being looked after by someone you trust. Pack their favourite bed or toys to help them feel at home.

At home, keep pets cool with plenty of shade, fresh water, and frozen treats. Smaller animals like guinea pigs and birds are especially sensitive to heat – bring them inside, cover their cages with wet towels, and provide icepacks or frozen water bottles. For horses and livestock, ensure they have access to shade and extra water to stay hydrated.

Walk dogs in the early morning or evening to avoid burnt paws and dehydration. And remember, NEVER leave pets in hot cars – it can be deadly in minutes.

Thinking of gifting a pet this Christmas? Remember, pets are a lifelong commitment, not just a holiday surprise.
