Flying fox management in the Maranoa region
Published on 10 December 2025
Maranoa Regional Council acknowledges community concerns about the temporary presence of flying fox colonies in local areas across the Maranoa region. These native mammals are a protected species and play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through pollination and seed dispersal.
Council, in partnership with the Queensland Government and environmental specialists, is implementing the Regional Flying Fox Management Plan (RFFMP). This plan supports proactive management, improved community communication, and the construction of a new roost area to better balance environmental and community needs.
Work will soon commence on an Annual Flying Fox Management Operations Plan, which will outline how Council manages roosts, monitors populations, and provides clear service levels for the community.
Spokesperson for Rural Services and Biosecurity, Cr Brendan Seawright, said that the plans will allow Council to continue to balance the needs of residents with environmental care of flying foxes across the Maranoa.
“The Regional Flying Fox Management Plan and Annual Flying Fox Management Operations Plan will allow Council to provide more assistance and support to our community and our flying fox management throughout the region,” Cr Seawright said.
Council appreciates residents’ understanding and cooperation as these plans are put into place.
Further updates will be shared on Council’s website and social media pages.
