Queenslanders are no stranger to disasters and emergencies and in recent years we have battled through drought, fire, flood and disease.

Council is now calling for volunteers to register their interest in assisting during times of disaster and emergency.

Mayor Tyson Golder said with another La Nina season upon us it’s more important than ever to get ready.

“Disaster recovery can be a long process, community and agencies rely on support from volunteers to provide clean-up, essential goods delivery, and personal support to affected community members” said Cr Golder.

The Mayor is encouraging businesses and individuals who are able to volunteer help, register directly with Council, outlining the assistance they can supply so that we, as a community, can be prepared early. Once registered, if there was an expected event, registered volunteers will be contacted.

This partnership will allow Council to provide coordinated disaster recovery volunteers when and wherever disaster strikes, whilst simultaneously focusing on essential disaster management activities.

“By registering in a proactive manner, we can ensure that the volunteer effort can be maximised in the event of disaster, rather than trying to establish this in the midst of a disaster response.” Cr Golder said.
