After over half the regional Council electors expressed their opinion in a Council name change survey, held back in September 2008, the Minister for Local Government, Ms Desley Boyle, today announced the new official title for the Regional Council to be Maranoa Regional Council.

A media release distributed by Ms Boyle’s office today, spoke of a new era in western Queensland following the Minister’s announcement that the Roma Regional Council is no more. Ms Boyle said council’s new name, Maranoa Regional Council, was now official and a “Congratulations to the council who have lead the consultation process.”

Ms Boyle expressed her sincere best wishes to the community and hopes the new name change is more than just a symbol, “This signals a new chapter in the history of this important region.”

In September 2008, Council contracted Market Facts, a Queensland market research company, to distribute and collate a regional name change survey, asking electors in the Region to state their naming preference for Roma Regional Council or Maranoa Regional Council. Surveys were mailed to 8,303 electors listed on the Roma Regional Council electoral roll and Market Facts indicated they were very impressed with the response rate received.

Maranoa Regional Council Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Randle, said Council, who has been pushing for the name change for the past 10 months, is very pleased with the outcome, “finalizing of the name change has given us the opportunity to move forward with a permanent identity for the first time since amalgamation”.

The process, which involved Council’s survey, the Electoral Commissioner’s independent review and then passing on this recommendation to the Local Government Minister, was finalised with the announcement today.

Maranoa Regional Council adopted an interim Roma Regional Council branding option over the past months, however has now adopted Council’s new branding as Maranoa Regional Council.
