Roma's biggest race meet, the XXXX Gold Roma Cup, will see an extra boost in resources this year, thanks to sponsorship of the event by Maranoa Regional Council.
The Roma Cup has long been an important event in the local social calendar, with widespread appeal growing consistent, in both rural and urban areas. The Cup attracts thousands of visitors each year, providing a large boost for local businesses. Maranoa Regional Council Director of Community Services, Tony Klein, said “the Roma Cup is undoubtedly one of the region’s signature visitor events with many thousands of people in attendance and as such has significant impact on tourism revenue to the industry”.
Growing popularity of the event has seen the Roma Turf Club request the assistance of Maranoa Regional Council for this year’s Roma Cup. “As far as visitor events go, the Roma Cup could certainly have as big an economic benefit for the town as events such as Easter in the Country”, Mr Klein said.
Council is supporting the 2009 Roma Cup through a range of activities, including the use of Council’s marquee, kindly donated by Qantas for the purpose of community events. Increases in attendance have also led to the need for additional rubbish facilities at the venue. “Traditionally Council has provided approximately 80 bins for this purpose which has proven insufficient for the needs of the event”, Mr Klein said. To cope with the rising number of attendees, Council will be purchasing an additional 20 wheelie bins for use at the event and other community functions.
Council is also assisting Roma Turf Club through in-kind support, by waiving refuse dumping fees for the event, and providing Council employees to assist in the preparation and set-up of the race meet.
The XXXX Gold Roma Cup will be held on Saturday 21 November at Bassett Park.
Community groups are reminded that applications for funding or in-kind assistance grants must be made through Council’s Community Grants Program. Applications for the second round of grants close on 30 September 2009.
