The Santos Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Project involves extraction of coal seam gas from fields around Roma, Emerald, Injune, and Taroom, through a 435 km gas transmission pipeline from the gas fields to Gladstone, to an LNG facility of approximately 10 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) on Curtis Island near Gladstone and associated infrastructure.
On 16 July 2007, the Coordinator-General declared the Project to be a ‘significant project’ for which an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is required in accordance with Part 4 of the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971 (Qld).
Maranoa Regional Council Mayor, Robert Loughnan, said he would like to see all impacts, positive or otherwise, drawn to the attention of the Queensland Government’s Coordinator-General, "so some solutions can be included as conditions on the project" and therefore called on Maranoa regional residents to register their comments on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). "There are some pretty obvious impacts on public and social infrastructure that Council included in its own submission. Impacts on Council assets, such as roads and airports are pretty clear and must be considered. Submissions for the Santos LNG Project EIS closed on August 17.
