Maranoa Regional Council is strongly encouraging residents to nominate individuals, organizations, or events, that make valuable contributions to the community and demonstrate the Aussie Spirit, for the 2010 Australia Day Awards Program are now open.
The theme of the 2010 Australia Day Award Ceremonies will reflect the spirit of Queensland’s 150th Birthday and celebrate what’s great about Australia and being Australian.
Maranoa Regional Council Community Development Coordinator, Nicola Sankowsky, said "Council is proud to continue with the tradition of hosting Australia Day Celebrations" and acknowledged "each community recognises their Australia Day Celebrations as an integral element of their social fabric and community events program."
Council has again nominated to be part of the Australia Day Ambassador Program, a volunteer initiative that sees high achieving and proud Australians attend local Australia Day Celebrations in towns and cities across the nation.
Ms Sankowsky said 2009 Australia Day Ambassador’s Alison Alexander, a renowned food and wine critic,and Charlie Erp, a professional golf coach, were openly welcomed to each community’s celebrations and thoroughly enjoyed their experience in the region.
During her visit, Ms Alexander explained "Australia Day is ‘the knitting of city and country’ and the heroes of our country don’t have to be sporting heroes, they can be ordinary people in our local communities."
"Council’s Community Development Team are looking forward to assisting with hosting the various events and activities throughout the region and we hope that many residents and visitors join with us in true Aussie Spirit to celebrate Australia Day’, said Ms Sankowsky.
Nominations must be lodged with Council by close of business November 13, 2009. Ms Sankowsky highlighted how important it is to Council that the exceptional contribution of individuals and community organisations across the region are acknowledged and celebrated.
Award categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, Sports Award, Junior Sports Award, Achievement Award and Cultural Award. Successful nominees will be presented with their awards at official Australia Day Ceremonies being coordinated by Maranoa Regional Council throughout the region on January 26, 2010.
