The Maranoa Regional Council has taken the first step in unifying the five planning schemes from the previous local government areas by releasing a Statement of Proposals or (SOP).

The SOP is the first step required to prepare a new planning scheme. It sets the strategic direction of Council by identifying matters Council believes the planning scheme will need to address, and explains how the Council intends to address these matters.

The Maranoa Regional Council Mayor, Robert Loughnan said:

“By stating what the Council is going to do, and how it is going to do it, the SOP provides the basis for consultation with the community, the State Government and other stakeholders in the region.”

When asked how the community will be involved Mayor Loughnan stated:

“It offers the opportunity for the community to gain an understanding of the challenges and issues for their area and to offer suggestions for the planning scheme by providing feedback through a variety of channels, such as mail, fax, email or community meetings to be held in centres across the Council area.”

“The SOP suggests some policy positions of the Council for land use planning, however Council, with the help of the community, is seeking some innovative planning solutions.”

The SOP is on display from 7 October to 3 December 2009 and can be viewed at council offices or on the Council web site at http://www.maranoa.qld.gov.au.  The schedule for public meetings will be advertised closer to their dates.
