Water restrictions remain in force for the Roma town urban area. Maranoa Regional Council is urging residents to water within the allocated times.
Council’s Manager of Environmental Health, Ms Kay Crosby said “as the weather starts to heat up, lawns and gardens need extra water, however we ask that residents remember to water during the specific times Council has requested”.
Monday – complete ban on watering (including hand held hoses or sprinklers) for all properties
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday - Odd number (Street address) houses permitted only
Wednesday, Friday and Sunday - Even number (Street address) houses permitted only
Reducing overall water use within our urban areas will reduce water extraction from bore aquifers and demand on pumping equipment. Residents can assist by ensuring that they water at appropriate times.
Ms Crosby encourages residents to conserve water through a variety of ways. “Simple application changes can make a difference and ensure your soil absorbs the water required for your plants”.
Watering Hints
- It is best to water plants early in the morning or late in the evening – that is prior to 9.00am or after 6.00pm. Watering in the middle of the day can burn plants, and much of the water is lost through evaporation thus not penetrating the ground to water plants.
- It is also important to mulch your garden and around trees to keep the moisture in the soil. This will allow less evaporation and water used whilst keeping plants green and healthy.
- Mulch also helps to build up nutrients in the soil which is good for your plants.
- A trigger nozzle attached to your garden hose is an easy way to save water. Instead of hand watering your plants with the hose continually running water, a trigger nozzle with an on/off switch allows you to direct water when and where it is needed.
- Choosing plants that are suited to your local soil and weather conditions can save water without restricting your choice of garden design.
