With the warmer weather approaching, residents are taking the opportunity to exercise with their pets. To keep our community active and safe at the same time, Council is urging animal owners to at all times be aware of their animals’ activities and keep them safely within the confines of their properties.

Over the past week the weather has been favourable and as sunset is later in the day, residents are enjoying undertaking exercise. However, it has been observed that a number of animal owners who take their animal for a walk do so without the animal being under effective control and on a leash in a public place.

Animal owners are reminded that when taking animals out into a public place you must ensure the following:

  • That your animal is allowed in the public space
  • When in a public place all dogs must be on a leash – this ensures that your animal is under effective control at all times
  • That your animal does not cause a nuisance or a menace to other animals or residents.

All animal owners are reminded that you have a responsibility to ensure your animal does not leave your residence/land without being under the effective control of a person.

Delegated officers of Council will be undertaking inspections of the streets outside of normal work hours. Should your dog be found wandering at large it will be taken to Council’s pound.

For further information on your responsibilities as an animal owner, please contact Council’s Manager of Environmental Health on 1300 007 662.
