Runner up of local government election to fill ninth Councillor position
Following Councillor Bryant’s resignation yesterday, Council moved to authorise the CEO to formally notify Wendy Newman of her appointment to Council, as runner up of the 2016 Quadrennial Local Government Election.
Wendy Newman, who will fill the ninth position on Maranoa Regional Council, is a resident of the south east part of the region and previous Maranoa councillor.
Deputy Mayor Jan Chambers said Wendy has extensive local government experience, having been a Maranoa Regional Councillor for one and a half terms.
“I am confident that Wendy will be a great fit with this Council team. Her experience and knowledge of local government, our Council area and the Surat community will be an extremely valuable addition,” Cr Chambers said.
“Given it has not been 12 months since the Maranoa community was given the opportunity to vote in the local government election (and Wendy’s extensive council experience), Council believed going with the runner up instead of having the cost of conducting a by-election is by far the best decision for our residents and ratepayers.
“We look forward to working with Wendy for the remainder of this term on matters for the Maranoa.”
Council’s CEO Julie Reitano confirmed that she contacted Wendy yesterday evening and that she has accepted the offer to fill the Councillor position.
