Home-based Food Businesses - Food licensing reminder

Residents are reminded that any form of home-based preparation of food for sale requires a home-based food business licence.

Food safety is an important issue and food businesses are required to ensure that they handle, store, display and sell food in a safe manner. It is important for people to understand how their activities contribute to the safety of food and how they can decrease the risk of food borne illness.

Operating a home-based food business without a licence increases the risk of food borne illness if there is improper food handling practices; it is also an offence under the Food Act 2006.

The Food Act 2006 requires the following businesses to hold a food license:

  • Bed and Breakfast accommodation
  • Home based catering
  • Any individuals selling baked goods such as cakes and jams.

Food business application forms can be collected from any Maranoa Regional Council Customer Service Centre.

Licensable food businesses are required to nominate and have a certified food safety supervisor.
