Any animal found wandering at large (not under the effective control of a person) in a public place or on a private property can be impounded by an authorised officer with the approval of the private property occupier.

Animals found wandering at large can be delivered to the pound strictly by prior arrangement with Council. Authorised officers are not obliged to accept custody of an animal wandering at large on private property.

Reclaiming an Animal From the Pound

Impounded animals are held at the pound for a period of three working days, or five working days if microchipped and/or registered. If you believe a dog being held at Roma Pound belongs to you, please contact Council's Customer Service Centre on 1300 007 662.

Relevant release, registration, microchipping and/or sustenance fees may be charged. Payment for release may be made at the Roma Customer Service Centre between 8.20am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Collection times are 3pm - 3.30pm, Monday to Friday only, at the Community Hub, 57 Bungil Street, Roma.

Receipt of payment must be presented to Council's authorised officer at the time of collection.

Adopting an Animal From the Pound

Persons interested in adopting a dog currently being held in the pound should register their interest at a Council Customer Service Centre.  Animals are held for five days from the time they have passed a temperament test.

To ensure the best start for your new pet, the adoption fee includes microchipping, desexing and registration.  All relevant fees are to be paid prior to release from the pound.
