Maruma-Li Mari Outreach Service

 

Who are we?

Maruma-Li Mari Outreach Service is a community legal justice service, advisory and referral centre for victims of family violence providing practical assistance and emotional support to people seeking to deal with the effects of family violence.  The service covers the towns of Cherbourg, Murgon, Goondiwindi, Roma, Mitchell, Charleville, Cunnamulla and Quilpie.  Maruma-Li Mari Outreach Service is funded by the Commonwealth Attorney General's Department and is auspiced by Maranoa Regional Council through the Roma Neighbourhood Centre.  The service is specifically funded for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

  • Advice and casework in legal issues
  • Legal assistance in sexual assault cases
  • Domestic Violence Protection Orders - applications, extensions and variations
  • Family law
  • Victims compensation claims
  • Assistance with legal problems related to family violence such as Centrelink issues, fines or child support
  • Assistance with breaches of orders
  • Counselling and ongoing support to victims of family violence and sexual assault
  • Advocating for the best interests of child clients particularly relating to care and protection
  • Information, support and referral
  • Education and training on family violence and sexual assault issues
  • Assistance in  understanding the Court system
  • Culturally sensitive and appropriate

 

Domestic and Family Violence is the use of abusive and violent behaviour to control and dominate another person in a relationship.

Spousal

  • Married
  • Separated
  • Divorced
  • Biological parents of children

 

Intimate Personal

  • Are or were engaged to be married
  • Are or were dating
  • Lives enmeshed

 

Informal Care

  • Receiving or providing informal care to someone due to: disability, illness or impairment

 

Family

  • Relatives by blood
  • Relatives by marriage

 

Domestic and Family Violence can be:

Physical

  • pushing
  • shoving
  • slapping
  • biting
  • kicking
  • punching
  • using weapons

 

Verbal

  • put downs
  • threats to hurt the other person, or their relatives or friends
  • criticising, humiliating or insulting the other person

 

Social

  • any behaviour which isolates the victim from family and friends
  • not allowing the victim to leave home
  • controlling the use of the phone or car

 

Financial

  • control of access to money
  • deprive the victim of food, shelter and medical care

 

Sexual

  • unwanted sexual activity
  • forced participation in humiliating sexual acts
  • withholding affection
  • sex on demand
  • rape

 

Domestic and Family Violence can also include property damage and harm to animals.
