Family Support Service
What is Family Support?
The Family Support Service provides assistance for families with a child, or children, under the age of 18 years. Family Support works with families to enhance their functioning and or assist families to deal with any issues. The Family Support Service is based at the Roma Neighbourhood Centre. The Service comprises a support worker and a part-time administrative assistant.
Assistance Available
- A free, confidential service
- Practical support and advice for parenting and family issues
- A support worker who can travel to your home or meet you at the office
- Budgeting skills
- Playgroup Access
- Referrals to other appropriate support services such as Mental Health Workers, Domestic and Family Violence Workers, Other Counsellors and Crisis Accommodation
- P5 Pleasurable Parenting Program - individual and workshop sessions
Clients are expected to:
- Be honest and provide accurate information
- Cooperate with the staff and ask questions where any aspects are unclear, or further clarification is needed
- Respect other clients and staff and their right to privacy and dignity
- Keep scheduled appointments or contact staff and give notice of any cancellations
- Inform the Organisation of any problems or dissatisfaction with the service
- Be aware that disruptive, aggressive or other inappropriate conduct could result in a request to leave the premises
What you can expect from the Family Support Service:
- To be informed of services available
- To receive information and services in a language you can understand
- To receive impartial treatment regardless of race, religion, sex, ethnicity, age, disability or source of financial income
- Recognition, respect and dignity as an individual
- The right to privacy and confidentiality
- To have the right to complain about the service you are receiving without the fear of retribution
- Access to information about yourself under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act
- To have an advocate or a nominated person, to represent you if desired
Family Support Links
Living Involves Family Encouragement (LIFE) Program:
This is an Interagency project offering families intensive one on one support by a variety of services, including Anglicare Western Region, Roma Neighbourhood Centre, Community Health, Disability Services Queensland, Education Queensland and Department of Communities. The LIFE Program looks to support the social and educational growth of families of children at risk. LIFE works to strengthen families' abilities to cope with stressful situations by equipping them with the skills to acquire formal and informal support networks.
P5 Pleasurable Parenting Program:
P5 focus being community-based, for parents by parents, Australian Families from a variety of cultural background are enjoying this simple yet empowering approach to parenting. The Family Support Service has a facilitator trained to offer the P5 Program.
P5 offers strategies and ideas to help parents:
- Aims to increase awareness of how we REACT and RESPOND to Children's and Adults challenging behaviours
- Strong focus on personal FEELINGS and BELIEFS
- Strong focus on COMMUNICATION skills
- Support personal NEEDS and time limitations
- Offers SKILLED BASED parenting as an alternative to power and fear.
- Supports WOMEN and MEN parenting together or independently
- Suitable to ALL family cultures parenting BABIES to ADOLESCENTS
- Community Based Empowerment model for parents by parents with supoprting professionals
- Based on learning the skills of PRO-SOCIAL INDEPENDENT LIVING
- Embraces parenthood and enriches family and social relatonships
P5 is a structured program that requires participation and helps parents to explore the issues of parenting in a way that allows them to make informed and responsible decisions.
